My Name Is Khan, directed by Karan Johar and starring Bollywood idol Shahrukh Khan (at times spelled Shah Rukh Khan), is a recent release that benefited from widespread controversy. Currently showing at about 1,570 worldwide, My Name Is Khan has grossed $25 million in its first 10 days — most of that on its first weekend, when the furor and threats of attacks at movie houses showing the film in India were very much in the news.
The 2h40m tale of a man with Asperger Syndrome (Khan) who suffers discrimination in the United States following the 2001 terrorist attacks and who wants to meet US president Barack Obama broke Bollywood records in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and New Zealand on its opening weekend, following a political uproar caused by Shahrukh Khan's remark that India's Premier League cricket team didn't have any Pakistanis in it. In response, the nationalist Hindu party Shiv Sena attacked both Khan and his film. The ensuing controversy has meant busy cash registers at the box office in various countries with large Indian populations.Expectations were high for 2010. In 2010 My Name Is Khan opened with huge numbers. MNIK became 3rd biggest opening after 3 Idiots and Ghajini. But fell down in second week. Budget was extremely heavy so inspite of good revenue earned MNIK couldn’t get clean hit tag.
After average 2009 Housefull was first release of Akshay Kumar.Housefull opened better than MNIK even it was head to head with Ghajini. Now Housefull has second biggest first weekend and third biggest first week.
Housefull followed pattern of Akshay’s previous releases and fell down badly in second week. But reasonable price tag has helped it to get clean hit tag.
Box office comparison between Akshay Kumar’s Housefull and Shahrukh Khan’s My Name Is Khan is as follows:
After collections of two weeks Housefull and MNIK are standing next to each others. But decent budget of Housefull is in its favour.
http://bollyplus.com/MNIK_vs_Housefull_Box-Office_Report.phpShahrukh Khan’s latest film My Name Is Khan is turning out to be a box office dynamo not just at home but overseas as well. In its opening weekend only, the film is estimated to have raked in close to Rs. 40 crore. Only a few films in Bollywood, particularly the ones starring Aamir Khan, have managed to get such a mammoth opening at ticket windows.
In North America, the movie broke the record for the highest earning Hindi film in the opening weekend, making an estimated $ 1.86 million. The previous largest grosser in North America was SRK’s movie Om Shanti Om which had made $1.76 in 2007.
MNIK, distributed by the Fox Searchlight and directed by Karan Johar, managed an average of $15,500 from each of the 120 theatres across the United States and Canada over a three-day weekend. The maximum earning came on Saturday, but the collections dipped a bit on Sunday due to Valentine’s Day. However, Monday being a holiday in the US (President’s Day) the movie is expected to touch the $2 million mark.
Considering the sweeping reviews the film has got from critics worldwide, trade pundits are hopeful that the film might make Rs. 100 crore by the end of its first week’s run.
Surely, Shahrukh, K-Jo and Kajol must be ecstatic
